Externally, there are visual indicators which can suggest the need for more professional investigation.
– Vertical or horizontal cracks in brickwork. As the tie corrodes, the rust or metallic oxide that is produced takes up more space than the original tie and the bricks above and below are forced apart cracking the mortar bed.
– Bulging Brickwork. Expansion in the mass of corroded wall ties forces the outer wall skin either up or down.
– Cracks or separation of window reveals. Usually evident on the internal walls when expansion and movement causes gaps and cracking to appear between the window frame and the window reveal.
– Lintels sagging or pushed upwards or downwards. Can also affect window sills.
