Faulty Waterproofing Installation Costs Homeowner £45,000 to Correct.

Our CSSW-qualified surveyors were called in to provide a survey at a £4million house where deterioration in some wood had been observed in a plant/utility room.

What they found was completely incomprehensible and unforgiveable. We assume the installation was done by an amateur. If not, the installer ought to be ashamed of themselves!

There were several issues causing the problem and all caused by poor installation. For instance, there were no lapped details at the wall to floor junction. (See Image #1)

The next defect we found was that joints to the floor membrane were not sealed, enabling ingress of water in quite a few places. (See Image #2)

Perhaps most inept (or laziest) of all was one section of the pump outlet was not even connected! And, one section which was connected had limescale within the pump outlet and collection point. (See Images #3 & 4)

The extent of the water ingress was shown by the damage and decay to a door lining which had been sitting in the wet zone. (See Image #5)

Our surveyors believe that the membrane had been installed as an afterthought. Although, perhaps that should be “a lack of forethought”.

Correct installation is the key issue in waterproofing. If it is done incorrectly, moisture can build up, causing damage directly to the building and to the contents inside it.
