Basement Waterproofing in Bristol
This week the Premier 1st for Property Care team completed a basement waterproofing job in Bristol utilising Newton 8mm Cavity Membrane and Newton Fibran.
Damp proofing to basements is covered by British Standards document BS 8102: 2009 “Protection of structures against water from the ground”. This document specifies the performance level for the design of the waterproofing based upon the end use of the basement, grading from 1-3.
GRADES OF WATERPROOFING
- Grade 1 – Some water seepage and damp are tolerable depending on the intended use – Car parks, plant rooms etc.
- Grade 2 – No water penetration is acceptable. Damp areas are tolerable depending on the end-use – Plant rooms, workshops etc.
- Grade 3 – No dampness or water penetration is acceptable – Ventilated residential and commercial areas such as homes, offices, shops etc.
FIBRAN
Newton Fibran XPS 500-C is a 50mm deep, closed-cell thermal insulation board made from rigid extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) The product is most beneficial when an RC slab is in situ.
CAVITY MEMBRANE
The British Standard identifies that a drained cavity system is the safest method available for those seeking maximum assurance against system failure. This is because groundwater is controlled, diverted and harmlessly removed rather than being ‟blocked‟‟ at the point of entry. Consequently, the risk of increased Hydrostatic pressure is reduced, where directly applied systems generally increase the level of hydrostatic pressure imposed on the structure.
